Director of Capital Projects

The Archdiocese of Indianapolis is seeking a full time Director of Capital Projects for its central office. The Director of Capital Projects is responsible for overseeing the contract negotiations, preparation, design, bidding, construction and final occupancy of any new buildings or renovation of any existing buildings at parishes, agencies, and schools within the Archdiocese.

Major duties include assisting pastors, agency directors, and school administrators with:

  • Procurement of general construction management services when required for new construction or renovation projects
  • Procurement of architectural or engineering services when required for new construction or renovation projects
  • Review and approval of building system assessments, repairs, or replacements as required, e.g. roofs, windows, building envelopes, HVAC/plumbing/electrical systems
  • Review and approval of all contracts for architectural/engineering services and general construction/construction management services in consultation with archdiocesan general counsel
  • Serve as member of the Archdiocesan Building Commission, which reviews design/construction project drawings/specifications for technical competency of architectural/engineering documents prior to start of any construction project at any parish/agency/school facilities within the Archdiocese of Indianapolis.
  • Serve as member of Archdiocesan Capital Projects Committee for the review of parish/agency/school capital campaigns and their respective design/construction needs.
  • Serve as member of Archdiocesan Church Art & Architecture Commission to review all new church designs and church renovations within the Archdiocese and prepare recommendations for presentation to the archbishop for his final review and approval.
  • Review and attend all design and construction progress meetings for parish/agency/school capital projects to maintain compliance with archdiocesan requirements, schedule, and budgets; Assist pastors/agency directors/school administrators in this process.
  • Attend, as required by the CFO, ADLF committee meetings for review of loan requests for construction projects.
  • Assist in preparation of annual capital expenditure needs and implementation at Catholic Cemetery Association sites.

Qualified applicants will meet the following specifications and requirements:

  • Knowledge of building codes, building, and engineering systems, and the required maintenance of buildings
  • General knowledge of Word/Excel/Outlook/facility management software/AutoCAD.
  • Ability to read architects’/engineers’ building construction documents and specifications to ascertain scope, building system types/quality and locations in a building, the proper requirements for the appropriateness of each system, and the required general maintenance of these systems.
  • Ability to bend over and reach overhead while working; ability to occasionally lift 50 pounds; ability to climb a ladder and scaffolding to review exterior/interior building systems.
  • Personal characteristics include integrity, a commitment to the mission of the Catholic Church, and confidentiality of information.
  • Ability to review, prepare and maintain budgets of multiple properties.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in facility management, engineering, or architecture
  • Minimum of 10-years of experience as a facility manager, engineer, or architect, responsible for similar facilities.

Working Environment:

  • On-site position with regular, scheduled hours from 8 AM to 5:30 PM, Monday through Thursday, with a daily 45-minute lunch break.  Some evening and weekend hours will be required.
  • Ability to drive/travel throughout the archdiocesan boundaries by car is required for attendance at parish, agency, and school meetings. 
  • Must be able to respond to 24-hour security calls and building & mechanical/electrical system needs, if required, at the various buildings/campus locations.
