The Benedictine Inn in Beech Grove on the southeast side of Indianapolis is planning a day trip to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods in Saint Mary-of-the-Woods for the feast of St. Theodora Guérin on Oct. 3.
St. Theordora Guérin was the founder of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. Canonized in October 2006, she is the first saint from Indiana. Her feast day is Oct. 3.
A bus will leave the Benedict Inn, 1402 Southern Ave. in Beech Grove, at 8:30 a.m. to arrive in time for 11 a.m. Mass with the Sisters of Providence. Lunch will follow, then the group will embark on a guided tour of the grounds. The bus will arrive back at the Benedict Inn by 6 p.m.
The trip to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods is the first in a series of visits planned by the Benedict Inn to religious communities in Indiana. Other upcoming destinations include the Sisters of St. Francis in Oldenburg, the Sisters of St. Benedict in Ferdinand, the monks of Saint Meinrad Archabbey in St. Meinrad and the Our Lady of Victory Missionary Sisters in Huntington, Ind., in the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend.
Proceeds from all of the planned trips will go toward renewing and beautifying rooms at the Benedict Inn.
The cost for the trip to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods is $90. Registration and payment must be received by Sept. 23.
For archdiocesan employees, this trip qualifies for the Faith@Work program during the Year of Faith, which allows for reimbursement up to $100.
To register, send your name, address and phone number to the Benedict Inn, 1402 Southern Ave., Beech Grove, IN 46107, along with a check for $90 made out to “Benedict Inn” and a note that the payment is for the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods day trip.

St. Vincent de Paul ‘Friends of the Poor’ Walk in Indianapolis is set for Sept. 28
The Indianapolis Council of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will be joining in the national organization’s “Friends of the Poor” Walk to raise awareness of poverty and funds for the organization. This non-competitive walk (or run) of routes ranging from 1-3 miles will be held at Washington Park, 3031 E. 30th St. in Indianapolis, across from the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry on Sept. 28. Registration begins at 9 a.m., and the event begins at 10 a.m.
All proceeds benefit the local St. Vincent de Paul parish conferences and council, which are operated entirely by volunteers.
The funds will help supply healthy food choices for the 10,000 people served weekly by the Indianapolis food pantry; bedding, clothing, furniture and appliances given to eligible clients at the Indianapolis St. Vincent de Paul distribution center; and food and items to serve the homeless of Indianapolis through the St. Vincent de Paul Beggars for the Poor ministry.
This year’s event includes informational stops along the way providing statistics about poverty, action ideas and prayers. The event will also be hosted by a disc jockey, weather permitting.
To register online as a participant, log on to http:/IndySVdPWalk.org, where instructions and links to the national site are available. Participants then seek donations from individuals online via credit card, or they can bring their collected cash and checks on the day of the event.
Walk-up participants are welcome on the day of the event, but are asked to provide a minimum $25 donation.
For those who wish to donate but do not know a walker, online credit card donations can be made by logging on to http:/IndySVdPWalk.org then clicking on “Virtual Vicky.”
